Selfie Queens Beware: You May Be Aging Your Skin
We have all fallen victim to the selfie craze at one point or another—even Skinetics’ very own Holly Todd have snapped a few. What seems like harmless fun may have repercussions that last far longer than your latest Snapchat story. Recently published in The Telegraph, a new article has laid claim that smartphones, and selfies in particular, may expedite the aging process.
No Filter to Protect You
Leading dermatologists now believe that regular exposure to the light and electromagnetic radiation given off by our smartphones damages the skin and thus accelerates the effects of photoaging. Amongst those who hold this to be true is world renowned dermatologist, Dr. Zen Obagi. “Your phone will damage your skin,” he says.
The founder of ZO® Skin Health by Zein Obagi. MD, Dr. Obagi is a skincare guru in his own right. While it has yet to be documented, Dr. Obagi has observed this phenomenon in his clinical practice. Attesting to the effects, he is able to tell if “someone uses their right hand or left hand to hold their phone.” While it might seem unbelievable, Dr. Obagi explains, “you can start to see [a] dull, dirty looking texture that you cannot identify on one side of the face.”
Why is this Happening?
It is believed that the electromagnetic radiation from your smart phone is actually damaging your structural DNA. With breaks in the DNA strand, the skin is prevented from repairing itself—lending to an unhealthy complexion and promoting skin aging like fine lines and wrinkles.
What Can You Do?
Unfortunately, a cure-all has yet to exist. Instead, dermatologists agreed that it is necessary to keep your skin healthy from the inside out.
Start with Good Skincare: Professional grade skincare cleanses, nourishes, and protects the skin. We carry a number of professional skincare lines including ZO Skin Health, Neoceuticals, and Skinbetter at our Lufkin practice.
Exfoliate: Stimulating your skin’s natural healing cycle, exfoliation sloughs away damaged cells and allows for new, healthy cells to take their place. While a daily exfoliant, like Obagi Medical’s Exfoliating Cleanser, may suffice—deeper exfoliation may be necessary. In-office laser treatments, like HydraFacialMD® can encourage natural exfoliation deep within the skin.
Renew from the Inside Out: Forever Young BBL™ takes advantage of light energy to stimulate the regeneration of skin cells. This powerful treatment restores your skin to a healthy state while also making it look brighter and more vibrant.
